The Apollo National Geographic Bee Champion is…

After outstanding effort by all ten finalists in the Apollo National Geographic Bee, the exciting championship round came down to Arthur G and Jeevan M!  In the end, it was Jeevan who earned the title of school champion!

Jeevan will now take an online test provided by the National Geographic Society in an attempt to qualify for the state competition. The top 100 students in the state (selected based on qualifying test scores) will represent their schools at the state level. Compliments again to all our school finalists who competed on stage this year: Anjali D, Arthur G, Griffin H, Garrison H, Caleb H, James J, Jeevan M, Anastasia M, Jessica T and Shaira T. We all wish Jeevan the best of luck!

A big thank you to Ms. Ferranti for being the teacher coordinator of the Bee these past three years, Mrs. Harris for being the emcee and Mary Lou Pauly, city council member of Issaquah, for joining us as a judge. What a great show of support for our Apollo Rockets! Also a big thank you to the PTA for sponsoring this exciting event and the generous Apollo family who contributed additional funding for the Bee!

Please contact Stina Fluegge if you have any interest in helping to keep the Geographic Bee a yearly tradition at Apollo. The parent coordinator position will be open next year. Stina is ready to pass along all that you will need to take on the position with ease!

Does your company offer a corporate match program for nonprofit organizations?

Matching gifts are typically overlooked.   In 2012, The Chronicle of Philanthropy released a report entitled "How America's Biggest Companies Give." Two of the top 5 matching companies are right here in our community: Boeing and Microsoft. In fact, 65% of Microsoft employees request matching company contributions from their employer. Does your company have a matching gift program? If so, now is a great time to submit your Apollo PTA donations for matching.

Did you know that many employers will match your time, too? Apollo PTA has received over $7500 in contributions from our school family documenting and submitting their volunteer hours to their employer for matching this school year alone! What a great way to give back to our school AND have your employer support your child’s school.
